Newton's mayor wants to combine three of the city's four historic district commissions into one body — a change that would reshape how homeowners in Auburndale, Newtonville and Newton Upper Falls get approval for exterior renovations.

The City Council received the proposal Monday, and it's now been referred to the Zoning & Planning Committee with a January 2027 deadline. Newton currently runs four separate village-based historic commissions — Auburndale, Chestnut Hill, Newtonville and Upper Falls — each reviewing exterior changes within its own district. This plan would merge three of them into one; Chestnut Hill's commission would stay independent.
The affected commissions are already weighing in.
Auburndale's commission takes up the merger at its Wednesday meeting. Newton Upper Falls discussed it the week of July 5, though the outcome hasn't been made public. Newtonville hasn't yet scheduled a discussion.
Seven councilors want more answers first.
A separate docket from Councilors Block, Baker, Getz, Wright, Gordon, Farrell and Roche is pushing for a closer look at the commissions' workload, how members get appointed, current vacancies, and what support staff provide — also due by January 2027. No public staff report has laid out the full rationale for the merger beyond general workload and staffing concerns.

These commissions decide whether renovations, additions, and even streetlight installations fit a neighborhood's historic character. A merged commission would take over that authority across all three villages at once, rather than each community having its own dedicated body.
