Parking rules on four streets near Newton South High School are changing after the Newton Traffic Council voted unanimously to put a long-term trial in place.

The council voted 5-0 on Sept. 24 to hold item TC55-26 for a long-term trial, a proposal filed by Councilors Silber, Kalis and Farrell and School Committee Member Lee. The changes aim to balance parking demand with access for emergency, trash and recycling vehicles in the Ward 8 neighborhood, according to the Traffic Council's actions report.

The appeal window for city councilors closed Oct. 1.

Here is what changes street by street:

Roosevelt Road (Brandeis Road to Theodore Road): Parking prohibited on both sides at all times.

Brandeis Road (Roosevelt Road to Parker Terrace): The two-hour parking limit, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days, on the south side is removed.

Littlefield Road (Winston Road to the dead end): The two-hour limit on the north side extends from 7 a.m.–2 p.m. to 7 a.m.–4 p.m. on school days. From Greenwood Street to Winston Road, parking is prohibited on the south side on school days.

Greenwood Street sees the most changes. Between Dudley Road and Lion Drive, parking remains banned at all times on the south side. On the north side, the no-parking window on school days shifts from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. to 7 a.m.–4 p.m.

Between Lion Drive and Levbert Road (northern intersection), parking is prohibited 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days on the east side. Between Lion Drive and Burden Street, parking is banned at all times on the west side.

The proposal consolidates two earlier petitions. TC9-26, filed in February by Councilors Silber, Farrell and Kalis, sought parking restrictions on Greenwood Street between Lion Drive and Dudley Road to ensure emergency vehicle access. TC27-26, filed in May, targeted Littlefield Road based on a survey of all 21 occupied homes on the street, representing 41 registered drivers.

Both items were folded into TC55-26 at the Sept. 24 meeting, with the council voting 5-0 that no further action was needed on either.

The Sept. 24 agenda included a chair's note stating that abutters on Brandeis Road, Roosevelt Road, Littlefield Road and Greenwood Street between Dudley Road and Levbert Road had been notified of the meeting.

Voting members present for the Sept. 24 session were Ned Codd and David Koses of the Department of Public Works, Captain Devine of the Newton Police, resident member Mitch Fischman and Councilor Lucas. Councilors Farrell, Kalis, Leary and Silber also attended.

The item appears on the Traffic Council's Oct. 22 agenda under "items not yet scheduled for discussion." That meeting begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in Room 211 and is open in person or via Zoom, meeting ID 859 4809 5466.
