Newton firefighters at Fire Station 2 are getting an upgraded locker room and shower area.

The Public Facilities Committee voted unanimously June 17 to approve $327,000 for renovations at the Commonwealth Avenue station. The project includes construction, asbestos removal, new fixtures, ventilation work and a contingency fund.

Committee Chair Marc Laredo Kalis questioned the nearly $280,000 construction cost for what was described as a single long room. Commissioner of Public Buildings Alex Valcarce said the city sought bids from two contractors and selected the lower-priced proposal.

Councilors also discussed updating the shower design with taller privacy walls to better accommodate a more diverse firefighting workforce. Valcarce said he would review the design with the fire chief before construction begins.

Fire Station 2, at 1750 Commonwealth Ave., houses Engine 2, Engine 8 and Ladder 1.

The committee approved the funding 7-0. The city has not announced when construction will begin.
