Newton gathers Friday, Sept. 11, to remember eight residents killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, marking the 25th anniversary with a public ceremony at Fire Department Headquarters.

The City of Newton and the Newton 9/11 Memorial Committee are hosting the commemoration from 3 to 4 p.m. at 1164 Centre St., according to the city.

The event is free and open to all.

City officials will join families of those who died to reflect on their sacrifice and honor the first responders who stepped up 25 years ago. The ceremony will be held outside on the fire station lawn, near a memorial listing the names of the eight Newton natives, the Boston Globe reported. If it rains, organizers plan to move the event inside the station.

Among the Newton residents killed on Sept. 11, 2001, were Mark Bavis, Paige Farley-Hackel, Nicholas Humber, Aaron Jacobs, Stuart Meltzer and Richard Ross, according to Newton Beacon coverage. The full list of all eight names appears on the memorial at the fire station.

The Newton Veterans' Services Department is also involved in organizing the service, according to the city's announcement.
