It was a spring to remember for Newton tennis.

Both Newton South's girls and Newton North's boys captured MIAA Division 1 state championships, and now four members of those teams have been recognized among the best in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe.

The Globe named Newton South's Noura Guermazi and Newton North's Philip Goldberg as its Coaches of the Year, while Olivia Whitaker of Newton South and Johnny Wastcoat of Newton North earned Players of the Year honors. The All-Scholastics selections were released July 10.

For Newton South, the championship run ended in dominant fashion. The top-seeded Lions blanked Boston Latin 5-0 in the Division 1 final on June 14, giving the program its first state title in recent memory.

Coach Guermazi said the team's success was built long before match day. Rainouts became weight-room workouts instead of days off, while Friday team dinners, mentorship pairings and pre-match encouragement helped create a close-knit group.

"We're not gonna take a day off," Guermazi told Fig City News. "We're gonna put on some music, and we're gonna get to know each other."

Whitaker, who returned to Newton South after taking a gap year to compete in USTA tournaments, delivered a first-singles victory in the championship match. Junior Manel Guermazi also finished the season undefeated in singles and clinched the state title with her win.

Across town, Newton North's boys completed the sweep by bringing home the Division 1 championship of their own.

Wastcoat credited Goldberg for keeping the team mentally prepared throughout the season, while also building a culture where players enjoyed competing together as much as they enjoyed winning.

With two state championships, two Coach of the Year awards and two Player of the Year honors, Newton didn't just win this spring—it established itself as the state's premier tennis town.
