Newton South boys soccer fell 1-0 to Cambridge Rindge & Latin in a Dual County League match Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The loss drops Newton South to 7-6-4 overall and 5-3-2 in league play, good for fifth in the Dual County. The Lions are now on a two-game skid after also losing 2-0 to Wayland on Oct. 26.

Cambridge Rindge & Latin improved to 11-1-4 with the road win.

The Boston Globe's boys soccer notebook had previewed the matchup as a game to watch, listing Cambridge as No. 8 and Newton South as No. 7 in its poll. Both teams sat inside the top 10 heading into the contest.

The two-game losing streak comes at a tough time for a Lions squad with postseason ambitions. Head coach Floyd Butler told the Newton South student newspaper, the Denebola, earlier this season that he wanted to "finish the regular season as a top 8 team in the state." Senior captain Charlie Gomes Casseres told the Denebola the team needed to focus on "the little details and our fundamentals" before November.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) power rankings consider wins, strength of opponents and scoring margins, according to the Denebola. The top 32 qualifying teams make the state tournament.

The MaxPreps schedule shows no additional regular-season games listed after the Oct. 28 loss. The MIAA tournament bracket is scheduled for release on Nov. 6, per the Globe.
