Newton South's Tyler McMahon shot a 6-over-par 78 at the MIAA Division I North Sectional on Monday, Oct. 19. The eighth-place finish earned him a spot in the state individual golf championship.

McMahon was the lone Newton South golfer among the 18 players who qualified out of the North Sectional at Black Swan Country Club in Georgetown. The top 10 percent of individual scorers, including ties, advance to the state individual championship Monday, Oct. 26, at Wellesley Country Club, according to MassLive's complete sectional results.

The Lions as a team finished eighth at +44, well outside the top three needed to qualify for the team state finals. BC High repeated as sectional champion at +22, followed by Belmont (+29) and St. John's Prep (+30), according to the MIAA.

McMahon's individual result stands out against that team backdrop. He was described as "one of their best players" in an Oct. 11 Newton South Denebola article about the Lions' regular season. In that piece, the team had won a Sept. 22 match against Wayland without McMahon in the lineup, a result teammates said showed the squad's depth.

Hayden Altschuler, a Newton South golfer, told the Denebola in that Oct. 11 article that the team had its eyes on the postseason. "I'm just excited to keep playing," Altschuler said, "visiting new courses, winning, and then hopefully we reach sectionals and then states."

McMahon's 78 made him the lone Lion to advance. His score placed him one stroke behind a three-way tie for fifth at +5 among Will Jackmin of Belmont, Luke Gilman of Arlington and Kevin Cullity of Malden Catholic. Arlington's Owen Shea took medalist honors at +2 (74). A three-way tie for second at +4 (76) included Tyler Fawaz of North Andover and BC High's Henry Bizzozero and Jack Baldinelli.

McMahon tees off at Wellesley Country Club on Monday, Oct. 26.
