Newton’s City Council is scheduled to consider a proposal Monday, Nov. 2, that would shorten the winter overnight parking ban for the 2026–27 season.
The change would limit the ban to Jan. 2 through March 15, removing 48 days from the usual Dec. 1–March 31 period. The restricted hours would remain 2–6 a.m.
The proposal appears on the council’s Nov. 2 docket. It would apply for one winter rather than permanently change the seasonal schedule.
For residents, the distinction between the seasonal ban and snow-emergency restrictions matters. Shortening the calendar would not prevent the city from prohibiting on-street parking during or after snow and ice storms. Newton has said that authority exists with or without the winter overnight ban, according to a city explanation of the parking rules.
Drivers would still need to follow posted restrictions and any storm-related parking notices during the weeks removed from the seasonal ban.
The Public Safety and Transportation Committee recommended the trial by a 6-2 vote, Fig City News reported.
Until a change is approved, the existing December-through-March schedule remains in place. Residents can check the city’s winter storm information page for weather-related notices.
