The Newton Teachers Association is throwing its first Book Block Party on Sunday, Sept. 27, promising free books, free ice cream and free activities for Newton families with children from preschool through high school.
The union announced the event in a Facebook post on Thursday, Sept. 3, calling it an opportunity for families and community members to celebrate the return to school together.
To fill the giveaway shelves, the NTA is collecting new and gently used children's books at every Newton school building. Donated books should be in good condition, appropriate for readers from preschool age through high school and from donors' personal collections. Discarded school textbooks are not accepted.
The NTA also collected books at Convocation on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with collection boxes set up outside the Newton South High School Field House entrance.
Volunteers are needed.
An OurNewton.org post promoting the donation drive listed Historic Newton, Cooper Center, Langione Dance Center and New Art Center alongside the NTA, though the organizations' specific roles have not been confirmed.
The event is open to all Newton families and community members. Families who want to attend can RSVP through the union. A specific venue for the Sept. 27 event has not been announced. Questions can be directed to [email protected].
