Boston College women's soccer scored three first-half goals and beat SMU 3-1 on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Newton Campus Soccer Field in Chestnut Hill.
The win snapped a three-game winless stretch for the Eagles (9-2-1, 2-2-1 ACC). BC had lost to Notre Dame 4-0 on Sept. 18 and to California 1-0 on Sept. 25 before drawing 3-3 at Clemson on Sept. 27. The Eagles hadn't won since beating Syracuse on Sept. 13, a victory that extended their season-opening winning streak to eight games.
Sophomore Nico Kiorpes, a redshirt sophomore who transferred from Penn State, opened the scoring in the 18th minute with her seventh goal of the season. Amalia Dray added a second in the 34th minute off a corner kick, redirecting a cross from Ashley Roberts past SMU goalkeeper Aubrey Brown. Dray has scored in each of BC's last two games.
Freshman forward Addison Kalaw, a Needham native, capped the first-half scoring with about a minute left before the break. She headed a cross from Emily Mara into the net for her sixth goal of the season, tied for second-most on the team.
"We worked really hard on our set pieces this week," BC head coach Chris Watkins said after the game, as reported by The Heights. "Really excited about what we were able to do on a throw-in, and then on a corner kick to be able to create a goal."
SMU (5-4-3, 0-3-1 ACC) cut the deficit six minutes into the second half when Kamiya Beck scored past BC goalkeeper Olivia Shippee for her first career goal. The Mustangs took eight shots in the second half, double their first-half total of four.
Shippee finished with seven saves, her second-highest total this season, to preserve the two-goal margin.
Mara, a sophomore from Winchester, assisted on two of BC's three goals. She has already surpassed her freshman-season totals of three goals, one assist and seven points through the early stretch of her sophomore year.
The game was only the second all-time meeting between the programs. SMU had won the first matchup 1-0 in 2024, according to SMU's pregame notes.
