Newton North football is 3-0 for the first time in 12 years after a 14-12 upset of Weymouth on Sept. 25.

Senior captain Dominic Busa carried 19 times for 107 yards. Quarterback Connor Swanson scored both touchdowns on goal-line sneaks and threw for 139 yards, according to the Newton North Football account on X. Wide receiver Gio Chandler added 64 receiving yards. The win was Newton North's first over the Wildcats in eight years, according to the New England Patriots.

The Tigers trailed 6-0 at halftime before head coach Nick Capodilupo called a surprise onside kick to open the second half. Newton North recovered and scored on back-to-back drives to take a 14-6 lead. Weymouth cut the deficit to 14-12 in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers' defense stopped a 2-point conversion attempt and then stuffed the Wildcats on fourth-and-1 to seal it.

"To get to where we want to be, it starts with being able to beat teams like that … you have to take risks to beat a team like Weymouth," Capodilupo told MassLive after the game.

The milestone start has brought recognition. Capodilupo, a Newton North graduate and former team captain now in his sixth season, was named the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week. NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett visited Newton North on Tuesday, Sept. 29, and presented a $1,000 donation to the football program on behalf of the Kraft family and the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation.

Busa and Swanson were both named Boston Globe players of the week.

The 3-0 record caps a strong opening stretch for a program that went 6-5 last season, according to the Boston Globe's preseason preview. Newton North opened with a win over Waltham, then beat rival Newton South 20-14 in the Garden City Bowl on Sept. 18 at Dickinson Stadium. Busa scored twice in that game and credited his offensive line afterward.

"A running back can't be a running back without the big guys up front … I'm going to do my job if they give me the holes, and that's really it," Busa said after the Newton South win, as reported by the Newton Beacon.

The Tigers host Framingham on Friday, Oct. 2, then travel to Natick on Friday, Oct. 9. MassLive called the Natick game one that should reveal what Newton North can do this season.
