Newton North football is 4-0 and ranked No. 13 in the MIAA Division 1 power rankings, according to MassLive. It is the program's best start in over a decade.
The Tigers earned the ranking after beating Framingham 29-18 on Friday, Oct. 2, at Newton North High School. Quarterback Connor Swanson accounted for four touchdowns, two passing and two rushing, while senior captain Domenic Busa ran for 140 rushing yards. Wide receiver Nico Atwood added a receiving touchdown and an interception, and tight end David Whitter hauled in his first career touchdown catch.
Newton North's defense stopped all three of Framingham's two-point conversion attempts.
"We didn't feel like we were as dominant as we could have been at certain times," head coach Nick Capodilupo told MassLive after the game. He credited Framingham for fighting hard and praised his defense for containing the Flyers' standout player.
The 4-0 record is Newton North's best start since 2014, when the Tigers opened 7-0. The program has not reached the postseason since 2016. Under the MIAA's current format, the top 16 teams in each division qualify for the playoffs with at least three wins. At No. 13, Newton North sits inside that cutoff.
Busa has been the engine of the Tigers' ground attack all season. He rushed for 112 yards in a Week 3 comeback win over Weymouth and put up 122 receiving yards and 80 rushing yards in the Garden City Bowl victory over Newton South on Sept. 18. After that win, Busa credited his offensive line.
"A running back can't be a running back without the big guys up front," Busa said after the Sept. 18 Garden City Bowl. "So I just have to give the credit to them."
Capodilupo, a Newton North graduate and former team captain, was named the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week on Sept. 29 after the Weymouth win. NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett visited the school and presented a $1,000 donation to the football program on behalf of the Kraft family and the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation. That Weymouth victory was Newton North's first over the Wildcats in eight years.
The biggest test comes Friday, Oct. 9, when the Tigers host Natick at Newton North High School. Natick entered Week 4 at 1-2 and faced Mansfield on Saturday, Oct. 3, losing 28-0.
