The Newton School Committee takes up second-read votes on the district's FY28 Capital Improvement Plan and student handbooks Monday, Sept. 28, at the Education Center.

Both items cleared their first reads at the committee's Sept. 14 meeting. The Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), which covers fiscal year 2028, is listed on the consent agenda alongside a memo on foster care transportation and a transfer of textile funds. The specific projects and dollar amounts in the FY28 plan have not been released in an accessible format.

The business agenda carries a second read and vote on the Newton Public Schools (NPS) Rights & Responsibilities Handbook and the Newton North High School and Newton South High School student handbooks. All three documents were introduced Sept. 14. The agenda does not detail what changed between reads.

Also on the consent agenda: a memo to rename revolving accounts for class fee use, a donation request for an outdoor refrigerator pod, a second-read vote on naming a space at F.A. Day Middle School and a vote on the School Committee's calendar and agenda.

The business agenda also includes a math program update, a fiscal year 2026 operations and facilities recap, a discussion of Superintendent Anna Nolin's goals, and an overview of the district's policy rollout for the year.

Foster care transportation has been a recurring budget item. In February, the Newton City Council Finance Committee approved a $17,600 appropriation from certified free cash for foster care transportation costs. Assistant Superintendent Liam Hurley told the Finance Committee that the district spent roughly $37,000 on foster care transportation in fiscal year 2024. The state reimburses about 47% of those costs.

The committee meets at 6:30 p.m. at 100 Walnut St., Room 210. Residents can also join via Zoom. Public comment is open in person or by emailing [email protected] at least 30 minutes before the meeting. Each speaker gets three minutes.

Chair Alicia Piedadue leads the nine-member committee. Vice Chair Jason Bhardwaj and Mayor Marc Laredo, who serves ex officio, round out the panel.

The next regular meeting is Oct. 14.
