Newton's School Committee will vote on Superintendent Anna Nolin's goals at its Wednesday, Oct. 14 meeting. Members will also get their first look at building-level School Improvement Plans for the year.

The committee will convene at 6:30 p.m. at the Education Center, 100 Walnut St., Room 210, with a Zoom option available, according to the meeting agenda. Before the public session, members will meet in closed executive session at 5:30 p.m. to discuss bargaining strategy ahead of contract negotiations with the Newton Teachers Association (NTA) Units A through E.

The superintendent's goals are on the agenda for a second read and vote, meaning committee members reviewed a draft at a prior meeting and will now decide whether to adopt them. The specific content of the goals document has not been made publicly available. Nolin, now in her fourth year leading Newton Public Schools, told the Newton Beacon in August that she felt positive about the district's direction: "I trust that there will be difficult moments, but we're in a very different spot than we were three years ago."

The School Improvement Plans first read will give the public its initial look at priorities set by individual school buildings. The specific plans have not been released publicly. Several school councils are also reviewing their own improvement plans this week, including Lincoln-Eliot, F.A. Day Middle School, Mason-Rice, Williams and Countryside, according to Fig City News.

At F.A. Day Middle School, Interim Principal Mike Thurm's council is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Oct. 13 to review a draft plan and discuss next steps on a screen-time goal.

The committee will also hear a first read on a school bus bid contract term approval, listed under the consent agenda. No contract details, including the vendor or dollar amount, have been released. Other business items include a policy overview, a Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) opt-out memo, and revised policies on parent advisory councils and bus driver training.

The committee's NTA bargaining team includes Nolin, Chair Alicia Piedalue, Vice Chair Jason Bhardwaj and member Ben Schlesinger. At an Aug. 31 meeting, the committee discussed livestreaming bargaining sessions. The Negotiation Subcommittee is scheduled to meet separately on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. to continue strategy discussions.

The next regular meeting is Oct. 26.
