Democrat William Francis Galvin is seeking reelection as Massachusetts secretary of the Commonwealth in the Nov. 3, 2026, election against Republican Anne R. Brensley. Both are listed in the official candidate roster.
Galvin has held the office since 1995. His campaign biography describes an elections-law background and work in elections administration and financial-services oversight.
Elections and financial regulation
Galvin’s campaign biography highlights support for Election Day voter registration, mail voting and securities enforcement. Election Day registration is a proposal, rather than a description of the registration rules now in effect. His office administers state elections, corporate filings, public-records functions and other responsibilities shown on the secretary’s official website.
Those responsibilities affect how residents obtain election information, register businesses, access public documents and seek help concerning securities issues. The secretary works with local election officials; the office does not independently control every aspect of municipal government.
Authority and implementation
Changes to election statutes or appropriations require legislative action. Administrative authority is also constrained by state and federal law. Campaign descriptions of past work are distinct from independently verified savings or new enacted policies.
The sources reviewed do not provide a complete new 2026 implementation budget or a quantified local financial effect for every campaign priority.
The Newton Record did not receive a direct questionnaire response from the candidate and does not endorse candidates.
